The F1 title race initially seemed like a two-horse race between the two McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who both had big advantages over the rest of the field. However, Imola changed that.
Max Verstappen has clawed back into title contention after some aggressive driving in Emilia-Romagna that saw him greet the checkered flag 6.109 ahead of Norris.
Driver Championship
The result saw Norris reduce the gap in the Drivers’ Championship to 13 points behind his teammate, Piastri. Verstappen’s second trip inside Victory Lane this year, leaves him 22 units shy of the Australian behind. If any of the three leave Monaco with a victory, they could be the leader in the overall standings.
Imola produced mixed results for the Ferraris after both drivers exited in Q2. However, they upped their game on Sunday, with Lewis Hamilton delivering his best drive in the Italian car so far. Hamilton carries the momentum into the Principality, finishing inside the top three in the second practice session.
Charles Leclerc already has a podium finish this season, and returns to his home Grand Prix as the defending Champion. The local boy got his weekend off to a flier, topping both practice sessions on Friday.
Mandatory Two-Stop Race
Formula 1 has enforced a two-pit stop strategy in this edition, hoping to spice up the spectacle. Overtaking is a challenge on the narrow circuit, where seven of the last 10 races were won by the fastest qualifier. The intention is to create more space on the track, but the additional stop doubles the risk of a slow stop that would cost positions.
